In this guide we talk about Digital Stories (DS) and Digital Storytelling (DST). Digital Storytelling refers to a Process of working with people (storytellers) to create a Product, called digital stories (3-5min film).
DST could be considered a genre of short-form Documentary filmmaking where the storyteller is in control of every step of the creation process from selecting experiences for the story (Finding), writing the voiceover (Telling), determining images/music and utilizing video editing techniques (Crafting), and deciding where and how the story will be screened (Sharing). A DST Facilitator is someone who has the skills to support a storyteller through this entire process and these DST Facilitators must be trained so they can do this in the most ethical and effective way. A DST Trainer is someone who has extensive experience as a DST Facilitator and has themselves taken a specialized training to learn how to teach DST Facilitation to others. DST Trainers participate in continuing education courses, are connected to a Global community of practitioners, and adhere to the professional standards of this global community. In other words, there are many DST Facilitators, but few DST Trainers in Africa.
The purpose of this guide is to support DST Trainers such as those at the Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) DST Training Hub. This guide will be used to teach new DST Facilitators by equipping them with the required knowledge and skills to plan DST projects and utilize digital stories to effectively achieve project goals in the African context. This Guide is meant to be provided to DST Facilitators in Africa as a Guidebook for their DST Facilitator training course. It is one piece of a larger collection of resources created for DST Trainers to use as they teach. This Guide is not meant to be used apart from a DST Facilitator course at MUST. Please do not distribute this Guide to those who have not attended a formal DST Facilitator training course as reading the Guide is not adequate to become a fully proficient DST Facilitator.
If you are accessing this Guide outside of a DST Facilitator training course and are interested in becoming a DST Trainer, Facilitator, or Storyteller, please fill out the contact form at https://commonlanguagedst. org/africa-training-hub.
